New Urban Landscape for Pedestrians, Bicycles and Cars

Tel Aviv has gone from not having a single bicycle path fourteen years ago, to 100 kilometers of bike paths and lanes today. 38% of Tel Aviv residents own bicycles. The city began a bicycle rental program last spring, which has been very successful. The program plans to add 50 new stations and 500 more bikes this year.

The key design issue has been to strike a right balance between pedestrians, bikes and cars. According to the Municipal Director General, "Our idea is for vehicles to park underground and for pedestrians and bicyclists to be on the ground. It's the right thing, especially in a city as densely populated as Tel Aviv."
